Warming Up Your Winter Coat
Being able to look your best while still staying warm is a serious concern when the northern winter arrives. Although there are days you just need to pull on your parka, you can add to your tailored coat’s temperature threshold by following these three tips.
1) Materials Matter
Synthetic fabrics or blends just don’t have the heat of wool or alpaca. Choosing natural fibres will keep you warmer, but also look for additional fabric features like full-body wool fusing, flannel-back satin lining, an extra layer of lambswool, or a chamois interlining. None of these construction details add bulk, so you don’t have to sacrifice a sleek silhouette.
2) Consider Design
A fur-trimmed hood, double breasted front closure, yoking, high collar, or long hem length are all design details that keep the cold out. I once made the mistake of purchasing a bomber style parka and despite its down, fur, and technical wind-breaking fabric, my legs were always uncomfortable.
3) Layer Like You Mean It
Throwing a wool coat over a t-shirt won’t save you from frigid temperatures no matter how or what it’s made of. Consider doubling up your wool with a cozy cashmere sweater, or adding wind-breaking abilities with a fitted leather jacket, like I have here. Layers are a great way to make a style statement even if you aren’t concerned with warmth, so go all in and wear a fitted and oversized coat together. Lastly, don’t forget your accessories; hats, mitts, and scarves will save you.
